Why is my water bill so high? Is there a water leak?

The reason why your water water bill might be higher than usual is due to a leaking pipe, water leaks in or around your fixtures, or a change in your water usage.  If you have not changed the amount of water you are using then here are some of the common reasons:

–  A leaky faucet – Even the smallest drip can not only be annoying to hear but it can waste a substantial amount of water, causing that spike in water usage.

– A running toilet – It might sound unbelievable but a running toilet can cause you to use 200 gallons of water per day, depending on the flow rate of the leak.

– A water heater leaking – Not only do you want to check your water heater regularly to be sure it’s maintained but you also need to check for leaks.  A leaking water heater can cause a huge problem and potentially flood the area it’s in.  If your water heater is at least 10 years old, please call us to discuss replacement options. 

– A leaking water service line – the water line coming into your home could be damaged and leaking.  You may see signs of this in your yard where water has started pooling or you may have no visible signs.  We may find that your meter is running even when the water is turned off.  This could me a leaking water line.

– An outdoor faucet or sprinkler line could be leaking.  Be sure to check and see that your shut off valves work in case these items will not stop dripping.  We may need to repair the faucet or sprinkler line and/or replace the shut off valve if it’s not holding.

Of course there could be other reasons if you have water softner systems or well pumps, etc.  Bottom line…  be sure to check for signs of leaks, water pooling in certain areas, moisture spots on your walls or ceilings and call us if you suspect any problems.
